If you want to learn data science, you have your choice of online classes, lectures and other resources to build your skills.

With so many training options available, though, it can be hard to determine where to focus your efforts. This guide will help you sort out how to start and what you need to know for a career change.

But whatever route you choose, don’t think you can learn it all in a weekend cram session. Those working in this broad field, which involves using computer programming and statistics to crunch numbers on a large scale, need to be expert critical thinkers and demonstrate a certain level of tech acumen. It may take months or even years to learn what you need to know, so make sure you enjoy the work.

“If you really like it, you get into and enjoy it so much that the time you have to spend really isn’t such a big deal,” says Joel Sokol, director of the Master of Science in Analytics program on campus and online at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Data science might be for you if you’re interested in drawing insights from the patterns and trends you notice in data sets. You’ll need an inquisitive mind and a head for numbers as well as a knack for computer programming.

As a field, data science is relatively new. Many colleges didn’t offer data science programs until recently, so it’s not uncommon to see people who have “data scientist” or “data analyst” in their job title who didn’t receive formal training.

So how do you begin building your data science skills?

“The answer to that question really depends on the individual,” says Michael P. Cummings, director of the Master of Professional Studies program in Data Science and Analytics at the University of Maryland.

For example, a social sciences major might have taken college math courses like introductory probability and statistics but might lack computer programming experience. A person with a computing background may be an expert coder but have only basic stats knowledge.

“This is a sophisticated field. It’s nontrivial things to learn,” Cummings says. “That said, if someone has substantial background in some of the basic elements of it, their time may be accelerated.”

If you don’t have a strong foundation in math or computing, don’t be discouraged, says Joseph Nelson, distinguished faculty at General Assembly, which offers tech boot camps and classes, and co-founder of artificial intelligence startup Roboflow. You’ll need to spend more time getting up to speed, but your current career might have given you strong critical thinking skills that would serve you well in data science. Also, you likely have expertise in a subject, which can be an asset.

“The toughest things in data science aren’t necessarily writing the best code or having the most awareness of how matrix multiplication works,” he says. “Those things are important, but sometimes the principal problem is defining the problem to be solved.”

Whether you want to learn all you need through self-study or you’re planning to apply to a data science program, you need to master a few skills. Here’s where to begin.

Mathematics and Data Science

A strong math background is essential for data scientists. Cummings says learning basic statistics and probability is the best place to start. Both subjects serve as the foundation for a lot of data science.

As you delve deeper into the field, many algorithms, referring to the instructions that you give the computer, use elements of calculus, so that’s important to understand as well. Finally, linear algebra is key for exploring topics like machine learning.

Free resources are available to those who need a refresher on these subjects. Check out:

  • Khan Academy, an organization that publishes free courses on a variety of subjects.
  • Platforms like EdX and Coursera, which allow you to audit classes for free.
  • MIT OpenCourseWare, a free repository of course materials from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • Fast.ai, a free technology education platform that offers a linear algebra course geared toward those who already have coding skills.

Programming Languages and Data Science

Data scientists use programming languages to extract, reformat and help analyze their data. Among the most popular languages right now are:

  • Python. This programming language has a reputation for being easier to learn, and its code uses a lot of English words, like “print” and “class.” If you’re hoping to become a Pythonista – industry lingo for Python enthusiasts – the Python Software Foundation has a list of free tools and tutorials to get beginners started.
  • R. Like with Python, novices may find it relatively easy to pick up R. You can download it for free.

Both have additional packages that you can download to increase their capabilities. You can learn these languages by taking classes on platforms like DataCamp, EdX and Coursera or even by searching for lectures on YouTube.

In the short term, Sokol says knowing at least R or Python is important. That will change, though. “No matter what you’re using now, that’s not going to be the language or platform of choice even in the medium-term future,” he says.

It’s essential to know how to pick up new languages. Sokol says you can practice that skill by working on a data set with a language you don’t know. If you run into problems, you can post a question on Stack Overflow, an online community that even professional programmers use for troubleshooting.

As you’re learning a new programming language, consider why you’re doing what you’re doing and don’t get too hung up on the nitty-gritty of the language itself.

Indeed, it’s one thing to learn the syntax for a particular language, Cummings says. It’s another to recognize a problem or a question you can translate into something a computer can operate on. Those sorts of skills might not be covered in a class.

“The language is not the important thing,” Cummings says. “An elementary school child knows basic English. But do you want them to be writing corporate reports? Probably not.”

Once you’ve taken a programming language course, Sokol suggests taking a data pipelining course, which he teaches at Georgia Tech. He says this type of class takes you through the steps of data analysis – “from collecting and scraping the data you need, cleaning it, and storing it; through accessing the data for computation; to creating visualizations (like graphs, charts and other helpful images) of the data and results.”

Also consider taking a course on using data in the industry you are interested in, such as health care or business.

Machine Learning and Data Science

Critical to data science is machine learning, the idea that someone can train a computer to notice patterns in data.

Here’s a classic example, Nelson says: Say you want to find a way for a computer to tell the difference between pictures of dogs and pictures of cats. “If we were doing explicit programming – meaning a non-machine-learning method – we might say, ‘look for pointy ears, look for whiskers, look for this triangle-shaped nose.’”

On the other hand, you could give the computer a ton of pictures identified as either cats or dogs and tell it to create its own way of finding the differences between the two. It might come up with the same distinguishing factors you’d know about anyway. But it might find differences you hadn’t considered.

“That’s the power of machine learning,” Nelson says. “It discovers relationships that humans might not have discovered.” The task of the data scientist, he says, is to find the algorithms that allow a computer to make those rules.

You probably encounter machine learning more than you’d think: For instance, machine learning connects you with shows on Netflix you might like, and Gmail uses it to make its spam filter more effective.

Business and Communications Skills

In data science, running the numbers is only half the job. Data scientists need to know how to ask the right questions and understand what sort of analysis would be valuable to the business. You must also find ways to explain your results to less tech-savvy colleagues who need to use your analysis to make decisions.

“Those are sort of hidden skills that people don’t talk about so much,” Sokol says. “But I think they’re really important.”

To practice your communications skills, you could maintain a blog that describes the work you’re doing. You might even consider taking a class in public speaking.

Keep in mind, though: Data science is a broad field, so the tools you use may vary depending on where you work and what your job function is. For example, Cummings says some data scientists may never use SQL, a common database querying language, but often use R. Also, what tools are popular is constantly evolving.

“The main thing is being able to translate a problem that’s been articulated to you … into a computational problem that addresses the specific needs of the audience,” Cummings says.

The first step is determining whether you like working with data, Nelson says. Usually that means doing some studying on your own, even if you plan on pursuing a master’s degree or enrolling in a boot camp later.

As you shop for online courses, check out their ratings and ask people for recommendations. Then, try things out.

Self-directed study might be enough for you if you’re hoping to make the transition to a more data-focused role inside your current company, Cummings says. You might take on more responsibilities as your skills develop, which may not require a formal credential.

“History is filled with people that have made contributions to art, humanities, all sorts of fields and had little or no formal training or no degree,” Cummings says.

However, he adds, “the certification becomes important because that tells potential employers that you’ve met certain standards.”

So, a boot camp or a master’s degree in data science may be worth considering when you’re making a more dramatic switch. If you’re weighing more formal education options, think about what’s most desirable in the industry you wish to work in, what you can afford, how much time you can spend completing your education, the quality of the program and whether it covers the topics you’re interested in.

“If someone is looking for the right credential, looking a little deeper than the name is important. That’s true at every level, from the individual course to the boot camp to the certificate to the degree,” Sokol says. “Look beyond the name and see what’s actually being taught.”

The costs of online data classes vary.

Many are available for free, particularly if you opt to audit the course, while others are on platforms that charge as much as $400 a month. You may be able to try out courses with a free trial. Some courses may be part of a track that leads to a certification or a microdegree, referring to a credential in a particular subject that you may be able to count toward a full degree later.

For online master’s programs in data science at a major university, total tuition ranges from $9,900 to more than $42,000. Data science boot camps cost around $8,940 to $16,000. A boot camp may only take a couple months to finish, and a master’s program could take a year or longer, depending on the program and whether you attend classes part or full time.

Whether you’re ready to make the switch is not always clear. “It’s sort of hard to go by feeling,” Sokol says, but if you look at a posting and think, “I could do that” as you read what you’d be responsible for, “then, you’re probably ready.”

The good news is that data scientists have been in demand in recent years. “Before COVID-19, data scientist was one of the fastest-growing occupations,” says Julia Pollak, labor economist for the job site ZipRecruiter: Nationwide, job openings rose 21% between 2017 and 2018, and 86% between 2018 and 2019.

Though the number of data science jobs has experienced a steeper-than-average drop in the last few months, Pollak says that number is “very likely to rebound.”

“As more activities shift online, businesses will be able to capture even more consumer data,” she says. “Those best at analyzing and using the data will be at a distinct advantage in the future. So the business case for hiring data scientists will only get stronger.”

When applying for data science jobs, you need a resume. Peter Cooman, senior applied data scientist at Civis Analytics, a Chicago-based data science firm, also recommends having a portfolio that shows not only your technical skills but also includes blog posts and other items that demonstrate your ability to communicate.

“It’s by no means a requirement,” Cooman says of a portfolio, but it can help make the case that you’re well-suited for the job. You can host your portfolio on a personal website or GitHub, a platform that allows users to share code.

During the application process, data scientist hopefuls typically complete a take-home test to demonstrate their technical proficiency, Cooman says.

Candidates who do well come in for an interview. Cooman looks for people with strong communication skills, problem-solving skills and an enthusiasm for the work and whose experience would complement the existing team.

Where you learned the skills is less of a factor, says Cooman, a biomedical engineer by training who taught himself data science through Coursera and EdX courses.

“The people who are active in the data science workforce, like me, who are interviewing candidates and who are making hiring decisions, became data scientists without any formal academic training,” he says. “We understand people’s plight. We understand there are many different paths people can take to get into the field.”

When vetting candidates, Ashok Srivastava, senior vice president and chief data officer at Intuit, says he prioritizes technical know-how over a particular type of education.

Regardless of where they learned their skills, applicants at the financial software company are tested on their knowledge of math, statistics, computer science, machine learning a
nd other areas related to data science.

“In today’s world, there are many ways to learn,” Srivastava says. “We put the priority on the depth and breadth of the applicant’s knowledge, rather than how they acquired that knowledge.”

In between its gorgeous natural landscapes lies a picturesque mix of Victorian architecture and modest cottages. After you’ve strolled the town’s peaceful streets, venture to one of the many nearby parks, including Mendocino Headlands State Park, Russian Gulch State Marine Conservation Area and Van Damme State Park, to name a few.

Nevada City

For a glimpse at what California looked like during the gold rush, there is no better place than Nevada City. The town, located about 60 miles north of Sacramento, has made preservation of its historic downtown district a priority, so much so that it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Start your journey down Broad Street, the town’s main thoroughfare, where you will find much of Nevada City’s famously preserved architecture, which now houses plenty of businesses run by smiling locals. History lovers will no doubt want to tour the nearby Empire Mine State Historic Park, while outdoorsy types should take advantage of the adjacent Tahoe National Forest.

Idyllwild

Idyllwild is a great option for those who want to experience Yosemite-like landscapes, but don’t want to contend with the crowds that descend on the popular national park. Located about 105 miles east of Los Angeles, Idyllwild lies within Mount San Jacinto State Park, which is awash with green forested landscapes and plenty of granite peaks. The town’s rustic charm compliments the surrounding scenery. Before you venture into nature, explore Idyllwild’s central streets and peruse local businesses for one-of-a-kind goods (the town is devoid of chain restaurants and stores).

Solvang

Solvang is probably one of the most intriguing small towns in California. That’s because the town, located in the Santa Ynez Valley, is entirely Danish in style, giving visitors a taste of Denmark in the Golden State. Solvang doesn’t just look the part, but acts it, too. While exploring the town, you can shop for Danish souvenirs, such as wooden clogs, and chow down on tasty treats like aebleskiver, which closely resemble doughnut holes. Solvang is also a gateway to Santa Barbara wine country, though there are some tasting rooms available in town.

Morro Bay

This quaint fishing village located about 15 miles northwest of San Luis Obispo is the perfect retreat for travelers seeking a simple getaway. Morro Bay boasts a low-key, laid-back atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the scenery. The star of the show is Morro Rock, a 576-foot-tall volcanic plug that was previously used by mariners as a navigation tool as far back as 1542. Today, visitors admire the rock’s stature from adjacent beaches. As states begin lifting COVID-19 lockdowns and stay-at-home restrictions, and popular travel destinations like beaches and state parks start to open up, many eager Americans are turning to recreational vehicles as a way to safely travel while social distancing. By opting to get around by RV, vacationers can bypass tourist-filled locations like airports and hotels.

Popular peer-to-peer rental companies, such as RVshare and Outdoorsy, reported dramatic increases in bookings since early April. And in a recent survey of its users, RVshare found that 93% of respondents are looking to avoid crowds when planning their next trip.

If you’re thinking about taking an RV vacation this summer, consider these expert tips before renting.

Understand the Different Types of RVs

Before setting off on your RV adventure, it’s important to know what types of RVs are available. Most will fall into one of two categories: towable RVs and motorized RVs that you can drive.

Travel trailers, a type of towable RV, can come in a range of sizes, but they typically accommodate groups of three to six people and often come with features like kitchenettes and bathrooms. Fifth wheels are usually bigger and are often equipped with multiple slide-outs – or add-ons that extend the side walls of the RV to create more space – making them ideal for larger groups.

There are also several types of motorized RVs, including Class A motor homes, the largest and most luxurious kind of motor home that is great for those who want plenty of space and amenities like lounges and separate bedrooms. Class C motor homes are smaller and often more affordable than Class A motor homes while offering many of the same amenities.

Decide Which RV Will Suit Your Needs

Once you know the different types of RVs, you have to decide which one will best suit your needs. Some aspects to consider include storage space, sleeping arrangements and kitchen appliances. Jon Gray, CEO of RVshare, also recommends having a plan before you rent.

“What are you going to do? Are you going a thousand miles, so it’s a premium to be able to go a long way during one day? Or are you prioritizing having space within the RV, and you’re not really all that excited about driving it? Those would lend you to different things,” Gray says.

Also, while you might be tempted to seek out the largest RV possible, that may not be the best idea. Not only are larger RVs costlier, but they can also be more difficult to maneuver, especially for first-time RV renters. Bryanna Royal, who lives in an RV full time with her husband and four children and writes about it on her blog, Crazy Family Adventure, always recommends starting small.

“Smaller [RVs are] a whole lot easier to pull into a grocery store parking lot, make a random stop at a farm stand or turn around if you make a wrong turn,” Royal says. She also adds that staying at campsites and parks is easier with smaller RVs. “When you call and say, ‘we are looking for a site for a 23- to 30-foot rig,’ there are normally a lot of options. With a larger RV, it can be harder to find spots,” she says.

Find a Reputable Company to Rent From

After choosing the right RV for you, you need to know where to rent from. You can decide to go with traditional rental companies, such as Cruise America and El Monte RV. Or, you can rent directly from RV owners through a peer-to-peer company like RVshare or Outdoorsy, which Royal describes as “the Airbnb of RVs.” These companies often have a wider selection of options than traditional rental companies.

For example, RVshare offers more than 100,000 RVs on its platform, according to Gray. “Most of the rental companies … already rent through RVshare, so you can see their inventory right up against peer-to-peer inventory and pick what is best for your situation,” Gray adds.

Consider Additional Costs and Fees

RV travel can often be less expensive than traveling by plane or staying in a pricey hotel or vacation rental, but it’s still important to be aware of all costs and fees to ensure that you stay within your budget.

RV rental prices can vary widely, but on average, rentals can cost about $900 for a little less than a week, according to Gray. Depending on the size of the RV, you can usually expect to pay between $50 and $275 per night. There are other fees you’ll need to keep in mind as well, such as cancellation fees and mileage fees.

“In many cases, RVs give you a certain amount of miles and a certain amount of generator time, and if you use more than that, they’ll charge you, kind of similar to a rental car,” Gray explains. These fees can range from 25 cents to 75 cents per additional mile.

RVs are also known for having poor gas mileage, so make sure to factor in the cost of gas into your budget.

Book Rentals and Campgrounds in Advance

Similar to what you’d do when booking a hotel room or flight, the sooner you reserve your RV, the more money you’ll save. This is especially true during peak travel seasons like summer, which Gray calls “the core booking season for RVing.” Not only will this ensure that you will have an RV for your intended travel dates, but it will also likely save you some money, since prices tend to go up the closer you get to your departure date.

The same applies if you’re planning to stay on a campground overnight. Spots can be limited, especially in summer, so be sure to secure your spot several months in advance.

Choose Your Destination Wisely

One of the great things about an RV vacation is the freedom to go wherever you choose, but there are some places that are better suited for R
V travel than others. Outdoor locations like lakes and state and national parks are some of the most popular destinations for an RV vacation. These destinations usually offer a variety of activities, as well as campgrounds on-site or nearby.

On the other hand, you might want to avoid taking an RV to a big city. According to Royal, “The hardest places to explore with RV travel are big cities, usually because there aren’t any RV parks that are close to the city. So, you have to park a ways out and then drive into the city to explore.”

Do Your Research Before Selecting a Campground

Not all campgrounds offer the same amenities, so it’s important to know what you’re looking for before booking. Public campgrounds, such as those found in state parks, are often free or low cost and are a great way to immerse yourself in nature, but they can lack features like electricity and water hookups.

Private campgrounds, on the other hand, can be pricey, but they might be a better option if you’re looking for comfort and extra amenities, such as Wi-Fi access, swimming pools and hookups to water, power and sewer.

Additionally, if traveling with children, Royal suggests checking to see whether a campsite is kid-friendly, including whether it offers playgrounds, fields where children can play and activities for youngsters. However, Royal cautions that you should be on the lookout for extra fees for kids.

“There are campgrounds that have what we call a ‘kid tax,'” she says, “meaning that you have to pay extra per night for each kid that you have, sometimes as much as $5 per each kid! This is usually a sign to us that it isn’t a super family-friendly campground.”

After deciding on a destination, it’s time to plan out your route, and there are a few things you’ll want to consider. Do you want to take a longer, more scenic route with plenty of interesting pit stops, or do you want to take the quickest route possible? Will you have to drive through tolls, cities and congested areas? Does your intended route include potential RV obstacles, such as narrow roads or low bridges and tunnels?

Practice Driving and Parking

While RVs don’t require a special driver’s license, driving and parking an RV is a little different than driving and parking an average car since RVs are taller and heavier. RVs tend to make wider turns and require more braking time than a car, so make sure to practice turning, backing up, slowing down, braking and parking at your rental location or in an empty parking lot before setting out on your trip.

Packing for an RV vacation requires a little more thought than packing for a traditional hotel stay. Aside from the usual clothes and toiletries, there are also some extra items that you might need to bring, such as bedsheets, pillows, towels, dishes and utensils. Some RV owners will provide these for you, so check with them first. You can also save money by bringing snacks and food to cook rather than eating out.

Additionally, you’ll want to pack some activities to keep you and your family entertained. Royal suggests using electronics like iPads or audiobooks to keep young ones engaged while traveling long distances.

For those who want to limit the use of electronics, she says, “Buy small gifts for kids at the dollar store or discount bin at Target and wrap them. Then every hour, have your kids open one of the gifts.”

Be Prepared to Empty Your Own Waste

Having to empty your vehicle’s wastewater tank can be one of the messiest aspects of RV travel. Most RV parks and campgrounds have their own dump stations, but some don’t, so check before arriving.

When you’re ready to dump your waste, position the dump valve as close to the drain as possible and wear gloves during the entire process to make it as sanitary as possible. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, check to see if your campground offers its own dump services, but be prepared to pay a fee. Forgoing tanks and using public restrooms and campground showers is another option if you don’t want to worry about dumping your own wastewater.

It is required by law in most states to at least have liability insurance for your rental if you are driving a motor home. Towable RVs are usually covered by your regular auto insurance policy. Some companies like RVshare provide standard insurance and roadside assistance at no additional cost, while others allow you to purchase insurance for a fee.

Standard RV insurance typically covers damage caused by collisions, weather and theft. You can also check with your auto or homeowners insurance provider to see if it offers coverage for RV rentals.

Whether you’re planning to explore your own state or venture across the country, an RV vacation can be a fun, safe way to travel this summer. Just remember to do your research before you rent and plan and budget ahead of time to ensure you have a stress-free trip.

Project management is how you get things done using a set of skills, tools and techniques to meet the requirements of a project plan.

“It’s the leadership and coordination that brings a group of people together to achieve a unique goal,” says Eric Verzuh, president and founder of The Versatile Company, which offers training and consulting services.

The processes of project management fall into five groups, according to “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge,” or PMBOK Guide, from Project Management Institute, the leading association for project management standards and certifications. These groups include initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing the project.

Two common project management philosophies, or sets of ideas that help you solve problems, are waterfall and agile. Waterfall is a traditional approach that uses a single timeline and definitive project team roles. Agile is a newer, more flexible mindset that allows for adaptation throughout the project. One difference between the two is that waterfall aims to deliver the full product by the due date, while agile enables the product to be delivered in stages.

“Execution is paramount. But in order to execute, you have to have a good plan,” says Joseph Phillips, director of education for Instructing.com. “And this is what we call waterfall project management, where one phase waterfalls to the next.” By comparison, the agile mindset came from the software industry and lets you change and shift your priorities and actions, Phillips says. Out of agile comes two methodologies: scrum and kanban. Scrum is the most popular approach, using sprints – short, defined periods of time – to get things done in pieces. Kanban encourages the streamlining and organizing of tasks.

These project management philosophies are designed to work in many industries. “However, depending on the type of work you’re doing, you can do agile in arenas that we may have typically done waterfall,” Phillips says.

Methods and ideas you learn in project management online courses can be applied across fields, job titles and project types. Project management is not only a professional skill, but also a life skill, says Mike DePrisco, vice president, global experience and solutions at Project Management Institute.

“Whether you go into a field where you’re called a project manager, or you go into another field like HR, marketing, finances, journalism, and you work in projects, having an understanding and a basic knowledge of good project management is a good thing,” DePrisco says.

Project managers are responsible for keeping projects on task. “They clarify the goal,” Verzuh says. “What can we get done by the time it’s due for the money that we have?”

Every industry that has projects has project managers. They keep an eye on scope to limit distractions, make decisions and lead everyone involved in the project, who are called stakeholders. Decisions project managers make surround budgeting, scheduling, actual cost, cost performance index and total float, or slack, which is the opportunity for delay of a project’s deadline. They also manage team members and facilitate teamwork.

One challenge project managers face is picking the right project management methodology for the task at hand. Those who are well-versed in the different styles of project management and knowledgeable in those skills find success.

Project managers make a national average salary of $78,000, according to ZipRecruiter’s salary model. Jobs with a skill requirement of project management make a median of $84,895, and jobs with a project management professional, or PMP, certification as a skill requirement make a median of $120,877.

There isn’t one way to become a project manager. You can set yourself up for a project management path with a bachelor’s degree that leans on project-oriented coursework, though. Majors in areas like information technology, engineering, information services, financial services, construction and supply chain can prepare students for a master’s degree in project management, DePrisco says.

Think about the type of education you want with the skill set your resume needs and the possible returns on investment. Also consider time and cost. It could take weeks or years to become a project manager depending on the route you take. “In a matter of months, I can be PMP certified rather than going through a degree program,” Verzuh says.

But like in many industries, higher education is valued in a project management job candidate’s background.

“I think the master’s might give you some kind of good base knowledge,” says Richard Cheng, vice president of training and chief product owner at NextUp Solutions. “But the certifications give you more focused knowledge and specific techniques that you would use on the job today.”

When comparing certification and higher education options, consider that a PMP makes you job-ready, certifying you with the most current practices in the industry. Master’s degrees from university systems, which are often behind in the business world, can become outdated, Cheng says.

Those in the business of project management training note that unlike a master’s degree in project management, an MBA can take you in many different directions and is useful forever. The most desirable mix of credentials for a project manager is an MBA plus a PMP if you can afford this option.

“Having an MBA and a PMP makes you pretty marketable in terms of demonstrating a diverse set of skills and capabilities versus someone who might just have an MBA,” DePrisco says.

Although you do not need a certification to work as a project manager, it helps, and might be a qualification for certain jobs. If you are serious about becoming a project manager, the best way to certify your knowledge is with a PMP, which experts consider the gold standard of project management certifications around the world.

Project managers need to be able to think analytically and put together the big picture, Verzuh says. Data gathering, decision-making, problem-solving, brainstorming, conflict resolution, negotiation, communication and organization are other skills good project managers have.

“The value of the PMP is that it validates your experience and knowledge,” Phillips says, “(though) having a PMP does not necessarily mean you’re a great project manager.”

The most recognized project management certification is the PMP. Other popular certifications include the certified associate in project management, or CAPM, the certified scrummaster, or CSM, and the PMI agile certified practitioner, or PMI-ACP.

Skills index data from ZipRecruiter show sought-after skills on the market include project management, PMP, Microsoft project, project planning, project coordination, Atlassian (software product development) and Apache Maven (software project management), to name a few, says Julia Pollak, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter.

You can learn about these topics and become more skilled at using these tools with a certification.

“The CAPM is a good certification for individuals that are looking to understand and demonstrate their understanding of core project management knowledge, terminology (and) some of the effective processes related to project management,” DePrisco says. “It is ideally suited for an individual who is early in their career.”

The CAPM has less stringent exam requirements than the PMP. When screening individuals to qualify for the PMP, DePrisco says, PMI looks for years of experience, demonstrated knowledge, and applicability of that knowledge to projects and program leadership.

You can get a project management certification online – the PMP, CAPM and PMI-ACP can be proctored in-person or online. To best prepare for certification, look for training courses that come from a respected certifying body, Cheng says.

PMI and Scrum Alliance, the most recognized certifying body for agile, have registered education providers. REPs are certified to offer professional development units, or PDUs, which are the hours that count toward education requirements. Project management courses that display the PMI logo on training materials are up to PMI training standards, and CSM courses must be taught by certified scrum trainers, who are certified by Scrum Alliance.

“We have about 1,500 education providers that are affiliated with PMI, and to affiliate with PMI, you have to meet a certain level of quality and rigor in your exam preparation courses,” DePrisco says.

Requirements to sit for the PMP certification exam are:

  • A four-year degree
  • At least three years of experience leading projects
  • 35 hours of project management education or CAPM certification

If your highest level of education is a high school diploma, you need at least five years of experience leading projects as well as the 35 hours of training or CAPM certification to take the exam. You can complete training hours through hundreds of PMI-certified online courses. A PMI-certified course uses study materials that draw from the techniques and skills in the PMBOK Guide and PMP Examination Content Outline.

Depending on the course you choose, studying for the PMP can take days or months. With in-person training, you complete the education hour requirements in three to four days, DePrisco says.

Online courses for project management can take as long as you want, but Phillips recommends his students keep under four weeks to get the most out of his self-paced online training. Online courses are especially convenient to continue your professional development if you are under a stay-at-home order due to the coronavirus.

Formats of online courses include self-paced recorded lectures, live lectures and group discussions via video chat. Find the most engaging format for you to make the material stick.

Courses are full of complex practice questions that test PMP exam objectives, Phillips says. He uses process-driven questions to test what students think project managers should do in various scenarios.

“Let’s say you have a risk that comes into fruition. How would you best manage that risk depending on where you are in the project (and) what the risk is? Is time more important than money, or vice versa?” Phillips says.

The cost and quality of online courses for project management and PMP prep vary. Some are free, though many cost a few hundred dollars to $1,000 or $2,000. Once you have the education hours and meet the requirements, you can apply to take the PMP.

For PMI members, the exam costs $405. For nonmembers, it’s $555. The four-hour exam has 200 multiple-choice questions.

The learning doesn’t stop once you are certified. “Every one of our certifications requires a continued professional development aspect to it where you have to continue to learn over a three-year period to maintain your certification in good standing,” DePrisco says.

Over a three-year period, PMP holders must earn 60 hours of PDUs. You can earn PDUs from writing a book, volunteering at a chapter event, going to a speaker event or conference, or taking leadership training, for example.

Requirements to sit for the CAPM certification exam are:

  • Secondary degree – high school diploma, associate degree or global equivalent
  • 23 hours of project management education

The CAPM is for individuals who are early in their careers or just starting in project management and may not meet the more stringent requirements for the PMP. A CAPM certification on your resume shows that you understand project management and the tools to manage large projects.

CAPM prep online courses should be PMI-certified, using PMBOK and the CAPM Exam Content Outline as references. Cost and duration of online CAPM prep courses vary.

The CAPM outline covers 13 learning objectives including introduction to project management; project environment; role of the project manager; and management of project integration, scope, cost, quality, resources, communication, risk, procurement and stakeholders.

Once you meet the requirements, you can apply to take the CAPM. For PMI members, the exam costs $235. For nonmembers, it’s $300. The three-hour exam has 150 multiple-choice questions.

To maintain your CAPM certification, PMI requires you to retake the test every five years.

Requirements to sit for the CSM exam are:

  • Attend a course taught by a certified scrum trainer, in-person or live online
  • Or receive coaching from a certified agile coach

“CSM is essentially the PMP of the agile world,” Cheng says.

Scrum Alliance offers a two-day, 16-hour in-person training course to qualify for the CSM exam. Another option is a live online 14-hour course with a certified trainer.

When you take the two-day CSM training course via Scrum Alliance, you receive a two-year membership and online account with the organization, access to the CSM exam, and training materials such as a workbook, online resources and presentations. The course price through Scrum Alliance includes the exam fee and generally costs between $700 and $1,300, depending on the trainer.

The CSM requires a one-hour, 50-question exam. To maintain the certification, you must earn 20 hours of scrum education units, or SEUs, similar to PDUs, to renew your certification every two years. Additionally, there’s an administrative fee of $100 every two-year term.

CSM learning objectives, outlined by Scrum Alliance, fall into five categories: lean, agile and scrum; scrum master core competencies; service to the development team; service to the product owner; and service to the organization.

A CSM certification signifies that you understand scrum values, practices and applications, and can help a scrum team function. Like other project management certifications, a CSM demonstrates your ability to facilitate teamwork and limit distractions to complete a successful project.

“Scrum is a type of agile; it’s the most popular approach. Agile has a lot of different flavors, different approaches,” Phillips says.

Scrum is something you can implement, Cheng says. A term borrowed from rugby, a scrum is a huddle.

“In scrum, we huddle up every day for 15 minutes, and we talk about three things: what did you do yesterday, what are you going to do today and are there any impediments that are preventing you from moving forward,” Phillips says.

In the agile world, PMI offers the PMI-ACP, a certification for those who use agile frameworks and methodologies within their job, DePrisco says. “It’s more of a generalist type of a certification versus an acknowledgment for understanding one particular methodology, and it gives that individual more tools in their toolbelt from which they can leverage in their work environment,” DePrisco says.

The courses Cheng teaches were all in-person before stay-at-home orders went into effect. While his company NextUp Solutions pivots to online, Scrum Alliance is doing the same.

Cheng’s courses have varying formats, offering students different ways to engage. “It’s a mix of some lecture, some videos, some Q&A, small group discussions, some large group discussions, different exercises, activities and simulations,” he says.

A practice question for the CSM involves laying out IT scenarios that a project manager might come across and seeing how students would solve it. “Does that scenario and (that) decision made align with our agile values and principles or conflict with our agile values and principles?” Cheng says.

Don’t just collect certifications, Phillips says. “Get certified in something you’re going to enjoy and that you want to work in.”

Decide which certification makes the most sense for your career path. A credential to show for your technical education vouches for your ability to manage projects and deliver for stakeholders.

“The actual learning is the path toward certification,” Cheng says. “The certification itself is marketing.”

The letters on your resume speak to your knowledge, but the way you apply the skills will help you achieve success.
