Credit cards are adjusting their rewards programs as many Americans prepare to spend summer closer to home because of the coronavirus. The pandemic has interrupted travel plans and dramatically changed spending habits.
Here’s a closer look at the changes to these credit cards.
Earn More From Groceries
Rather than plane tickets or hotel stays, you could be charging foods such as meat and eggs. Grocery prices saw their biggest monthly increase in nearly 50 years last month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Using your Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred Card can help manage these costs by paying yourself back with rewards.
Normally, both cards earn one point per dollar on grocery store purchases and grocery delivery services such as Instacart. But through June 30, Chase Sapphire Reserve earns five points per dollar, and Chase Sapphire Card earns three points per dollar on up to $1,500 of grocery spending.
No activation is required to earn the increased rewards. Cardholders will automatically receive them.
Redeem Points for More Value
Chase Sapphire Preferred Card holders get 25% more value for points redeemed for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal compared with cash back; Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders get 50% more. This hasn’t changed, but it now extends to other categories.
Cardholders receive 25% more value through Sept. 30 on grocery store, dining, takeout, eligible delivery service and home improvement store purchases redeemed for statement credits through Chase’s Pay Yourself Back program.
Use Your Travel Credit at Home
Chase Sapphire Reserve’s $300 annual travel credit usually requires spending that amount on travel-related card purchases. With travel limited by the coronavirus, cardholders can apply gas station and grocery store purchases toward the travel credit through Dec. 31.
